Summary/Abstract: The text presents an analysis of the pioneering horror film “The Student of Prague” (directed by Stellan Rye) and two subsequent screen versions of the story inspired by the Faustian motif of selling one’s soul to the devil. The author considers the changes that took place in the poetics and the way of filmmaking in Germany over the period of just over twenty years. The years 1913-1935 included several periods in the history of German cinematography, which is reflected in the films analysed.
