Summary/Abstract: Today, discussions on the issues of higher education, its goals, objectives and renovation, are quite frequent. Controversy we observe leads to evident conclusion that fruitful solution of these issues requires strong conceptual basis. This paper discuses the popular idea that universities should meet the tendencies of today‘ s labor marker and the general tendencies of global and local economics. We defend the thesis that narrow utilitarianism should not be confused with significantly wider and reasoned pragmatic philosophy of education. Among other things, the paper concludes that narrow utilitarianism is simply a radical response to the other extreme position – idealistic educational philosophy.
