Summary/Abstract: The celebration of the 110th anniversary of Bulgarian novelist and playwright Emilian Stanev provides anoccasion for the critical evaluation of those of his texts which have been relatively neglected by learned commentators. The title of his post humously published play Nasan i nayave (Sleep and Wakefulness) alludesto one of the key transcultural ideas of modernity, which has ethical, philosophical and psychological implications. In addition, the play poses a number of questions concerning the ethical responsibility of scientistsin the modern world. The play’s title, Sleep and Wakefulness, can be interpreted as a metaphor denoting the duality of the human personality and the overall intellectual impasse typical of late modern civilization.
