Summary/Abstract: The recent publication of the Federal Statistical Institute entitled Privrednostatistički presek komuna u Jugoslaviji u 1961 (Economic and Statistical Cross Section of Communes in Yugoslavia in 1961) is one more in a series of moves designed to establish a thorough system of investigating and presenting data concerning the state and development of communes. The study gives a survey of the level of development of the productive forces in communes, the volume and structure of material production, the purchasing power of the population, and the possibilities in communes of financing local public services from their own resources. An understanding of differences among individual communes on the basis of these fundamental indicators is indispensable for grasping the problems of the communal system, which is one of the foundations of the Yugoslav social system.
