Summary/Abstract: The elections for representative bodies of socio-political communities held in May and June 1963 had many features which distinguished them from all earlier elections for representative bodies in Yugoslavia. These specific features were a result of the character of the representative system based on social self-government in working communities and communes, and also of the socio-political role played by direct producers in the management of social affairs. The elections were, in fact, the first step towards the implementation of the new Constitution. They were a practical confirmation of the idea that elections are an act of self-government by means of which citizens consider in detail all issues concerning economic development and socio-political relations and also the future work of the assemblies they are electing.
