Summary/Abstract: Pig husbandry has always been an important sector of the livestock industry in Yugoslavia where generations of pig farmers have had a long-standing tradition in successful production and exports to West European markets. Before the war, extensive production and the low prices of maize allowed for large-scale breeding of lard-pigs, which at that time were in very great demand on foreign markets. In addition, most small-town inhabitants and those living on the outskirts of large cities and in the surrounding villages reared pigs for their own needs.
