Summary/Abstract: Postwar industrial development in Yugoslavia has primarily been determined by the country’s general conception of growth. During the first postwar years development in all spheres was subordinate to the policy of industrialization. The prime target of the industrialization program in that period was to develop power and the basic industries. In contrast to this, in the last ten years the main stress has shifted to the manufacturing industries. The main objective of development policy was to build up a domestic industry which would be able to meet requirements at home. Under conditions of an inward- looking market it was not possible to rely on imports to meet potential domestic demand. In consequence, it was necessary to invest all efforts towards developing import-substituting industries, primarily with a view to cutting imports of finished goods. This resulted in a rapid increase in demand for a whole host of primary commodities and industrial materials.
