Summary/Abstract: Three periods can be distinguished in the development of the system of education since the war: 1945—1958, 1958—1963, and 1963 and thereafter. PERIOD 1945—1958. In these years numerous and varied changes were made in the system of education inherited from before the war, in order to bring it into line with the new socio-economic relations in the country. The most important alterations made in that period were: compulsory elementary schooling was extended first from four to seven and then (in 1952) to eight years; a considerable number of lower-grade, secondary and advanced vocational schools, colleges and university faculties were opened, and new subjects and a new approach were also introduced in the curricula and instructional programs of all schools; it was made possible, under specific conditions, for those completing secondary vocational schools to enroll at the university.
