Summary/Abstract: Every true writer in his or her career faces what we would call a „radical choice”. That is the choice between highbrow literature and popular literature, with all the possible (and obligatory) lights and shades in the meanings of these two notions towards literary practice. Indeed, the examples of a radical choice are especially perceptible in the conditions of the totalitarian regimes. A cursory juxtaposition of two seemingly distant writers, the Hungarian Sándor Márai and the Bulgarian Georgi Bozhinov, could focus the kernel of the problem. Through Pierre Bourdieu`s literary field scheme their worldly and constructive example acquires the exact contour. Not to forget one thing – within time with the glory of a masterpiece remains the literature most often born after the open or secret act of a radical choice on the part of the creator. That is to say, that literature which touches the high vocation of the Word – to distinguish, name and stand up for the truth.
