Some Contexts for the Construction and Actualization of Annual Holidays in Lithuania

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the specific historical and sociocultural factors that contributed to the emergence of the modern concept of annual holidays that have become traditional in Lithuania. The article describes the accessing of the theoretical ideas of social constructionism, specific inventors of annual holidays and their components as well as the ways this invention was made. The main attention is given to the impact of religion and political ideology in the process of creation of ritual year and the institutionalization of holidays. The article concludes that the most popular contemporary “traditional Lithuanian” holidays and their separate elements were created in 19th-20th c. The process lasts up till now. Due to Christianity, most popular Lithuanian holidays are religious holidays. The different restraints of religion partly actuate the compliance of Catholicism and Christian feasts with the Lithuanianness. Specific circumstances connected with the process of the creation of Lithuanian ethnic identity determined the interconnection of the pre-Christian tradition with Lithuanianness. The creation of motives of annual holidays relates to this tradition too.
