The definitions and forms of urban agriculture – a starting point for deliberation

Summary/Abstract: This article begins to address a new concept of urban agriculture that has appeared in Polish agricultural economics literature. The main aim is to work out a definition of agriculture in urban areas, what causes its use and to put forward the main forms of urban agriculture. Not only does this study contain research conducted by scientists from various countries, but it also proposes a definition of urban agriculture appropriate to Polish socio-economic conditions. The most important subjects of urban agriculture have been described, namely, its products and the realization of its functions. Two distinct forms of urban agriculture, urban agriculture and urban horticultural crops, have been defined. W artykule podjęto problematykę nowego w polskiej literaturze ekonomiczno-rolniczej pojęcia urban agriculture. Jego celem jest opracowanie definicji rolnictwa w miastach, dokonanie jej operacjonalizacji, a także przedstawienie głównych form miejskiej agrokultury. W opracowaniu zaprezentowano badania prowadzone przez naukowców z wielu krajów oraz zaproponowano adekwatną do polskich warunków społeczno-gospodarczych definicję miejskiej agrokultury. W toku prowadzonych dyskusji opisano najważniejsze podmioty miejskiej agrokultury, jej produkty, przedstawiono funkcje, jakie realizuje, a także wyodrębniono oraz scharakteryzowano dwie najważniejsze formy urban agriculture, tj. miejskie rolnictwo oraz miejskie uprawy ogrodnicze
