Summary/Abstract: Carnivorous plants grow in nitrogen-deficient soils. To supplement nitrogen deficiency, they developed highly specialized trap leaves which lure, kill and digest insects and other invertebrates. As a result of the degradation of victims, into the trap simple nitrogen compounds are released, which are absorbed by plant leaves. Carnivorous species are sometimes inhabited by symbiotic organisms which participate, by excretion of specific enzymes, in pray digestion. The goal of this paper is to describe anatomical, morphological, physiological and biochemical adaptations, which allow carnivorous plants to obtain nitrogen from animal bodies.
