Summary/Abstract: During millions years of evolution, some species of ants, termites and beetles independently worked out mutualistic interactions with fungi. Examples of the behaviour of such insects which insure proper conditions for growth and development of the fungi and get valuable food in return are presented. Attention was directed to microorganisms living in symbiosis with fungus-growing ants and producing antibiotics protecting ant colonies against bacterial infection.
