Summary/Abstract: In order to understand the cultural phenomenon referred to as “Bogomilism” in the Slavic lands, “Patarenism” in Italy, and “Catharism” in France, it is essential to recognize that this belief system — some would call it heresy - existed in Europe from the late tenth to the fifteenth centuries. An agglomeration of written and oral influences, some Christian and some pagan, Bogomilism was more a syncretism than a synthesis.
