Summary/Abstract: Turning back to Latin roots of term „medium“, the article searches for equivalents to contemporary conceptions of medium within the scholastic theory of science. The author of the article concludes that the status of above mentioned equivalents should be assigned to instrumenta sive media scientiae, that is, to demonstration and definition. The article confines itself to the first cognitive medium, analyzing definition and the necessary conditions of demonstration as well as species of demonstration and relations between them. Finally, the article emphasizes the attitude of the Scholastics that one can reach, retain and communicate reliable scientific knowledge only by combining and connecting the species of demonstrative medium.
