Summary/Abstract: A literary quotation, cut off from the original text, is widely disseminated in popular culture – it is mobile and accessible, inscribed in objects of daily use. Shallcross presents this process in the context of the progressive digitization of literature – a process that undermines the status of a printed book as a symbolic cultural centre – in order to argue that the quotation becomes a prosthetic and spectral remnant of the book. The practice of fusing the quotation to its material carrier supports the theoretical hypothesis (which has often been rejected) that Shallcross calls a textual object.
