Summary/Abstract: The article discusses within the sources of life philosophy, Ortega Y Gasset’s fundamental principles of cultural theory. It reveals his critical attitude to the tendencies of aggressive mass culture which manifested themselves in the first decades of the 20th century in a modernized Western culture. The focus of the article is on the complex analysis of the opposition between mass individual and spiritual genius in Ortega’s life and cultural philosophy. The comparative analysis used in the text demonstrates a disjunction between these two personality types and the conception of active and passive life which result from it. The destructive effect of these mass culture stereotypes upon the development of society, culture, and history, is revealed.
