Summary/Abstract: The theory of keyboard instruments through its many centuries of evolutional history has dealt with a range of subjects concerning interpretational and performance technique i.e. strategies and methods to overcome musical and problems of technique within the process of performing and education, hence the need for making such a theoretical paper. The subject of this paper contains two major segments: Overcoming problems of technique in the Concerto for piano and orchestra op. 11 no. 1 in E minor by Chopin; - The setting of formulas for overcoming problems of technique. Throughout the process of building the assumptions and the definition of the problem we had in mind the findings of pianistic practices both educational and performance wise, as well as conclusions from previous studies which state that problems of technique can be surmounted by using formulas. Problems of technique and the process of overcoming them have been treated as segments of piano technique according to the interpretation and classification by Alfred Corto (1877-1962), and the modifications of the musical material within the set formulas according to the layers of a musical piece byDimitrijeBužarovski. This research falls into the category of a case study which also defined the basic methodological approach used with qualitative techniques. Since the music piece was included in the repertoire of the interpretational part of this doctoral dissertation, the researcher had a dual role as interpreter (insider) and researcher (outsider). An analysis based on categorized procedures (types of techniques and layers of a musical piece) has been applied in this research which translates it into quantitative treatments that allow the display of distributions and use of other techniques within non-parametrical statistics. Accordingly the research design includes the formation of a database containing an analysis of the formulas. Our experience in the preparation of this concerto by Chopin has confirmed the importance of formulas in overcoming problems of technique as well as interpretational problems.
