Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence is a serious social phenomenon whose consequences are devastating for the family and physical and emotional integrity of all members. Violence against women is present in all stages of development of society and is an expression of the historical gender disparities. Females, regardless of age, are exposed to various forms of physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence, regardless of ethnic, religious racial, cultural affiliation and status. The new Council of Europe Convention is another step forward in eliminating inequality between men and women. By adopting it is recognizes the social significance of domestic violence, and indirectly that the existing legal instruments in this area have not produced the expected results. The Republic of Serbia is a signatory to the Convention, and the article discusses the importance of its ratification.
