Summary/Abstract: For over 40 years the Polish film industry was centralised, monopolised and managed by the socialist government. Between 1956 and 1980, five animated film studios were founded: in Łódź, Bielsko-Biała, Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań. Before 1989, all of the studios were very successful, both economically and artistically. The beginning of the 1990s was all about introducing the free market and commercialisation to Poland. The paper aims to find the reasons of the collapse of the animated film studios and answer how some of them managed to stay in the film business.
