Summary/Abstract: This article compares the philosophical work of the Japanese philosopher Hoseki Shin’ichi Hisamatsu and that of Martin Heidegger. The article shows that one can find possibilities for fruitful intercultural dialogue between East Asia and Western thought traditions. At the end of this article I provide i Zen Buddhism samples of Heidegger’s Japanese pupil, Kōichi Tsujimura. Those samples together with Hisamatsu’s work reveals agreement between the deep fundaments of Heidegger’s new thinking and those of Zen Buddhism‘s practical tradition. The main purpose of the article is to show that Heidegger’s new thinking does not reduce the significance of the tradition of Zen Buddhism, as Western dualistic metaphysics does. But even more, it opens new possibilities for a deeper understanding of an old Japanese cultural heritage.
