Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the recent evolution of the concept of cultural heritage, which is now ranging from monuments and groups of buildings to the recognition of the notions of cultural landscape and historic urban landscape. The paper stresses the perception of heritage in post-conflict situations, and, generally, the regeneration of values in society through educational and training programmes. It will further touch upon the processes of territorial management of historic areas and the development and implementation of management plans as these are recommended in the international doctrine, and particularly in the context of the World Heritage Convention. Finally, the paper will discuss recent trends in the identification of what would be meant by the historic urban landscape, and how it is expected to be integrated into the existing territorial management policies.
