Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the contribution made by several members of the Hromić family to the culture of the book in 19th century Bosnia, by collecting, transcribing and gifting books in Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Bosnian. Kadija (Judge) Salih Hromić is of particular note, as the donor of one of the leading private manuscript collections in this country; the article provides new information about his life, and a translation and transliteration of the vakufnama, originally written in Ottoman Turkish. Published works and library catalogues form the basis for an account of the contribution made by several members of the Hromić family to the culture of the book in Ottoman Bosnia. Since the background of Judge Hromić is somewhat obscure, the paper also includes details of his origins as derived from documents in Ottoman Turkish and Old Slavonic, as well as reference works and personal accounts by members of the family.
