Summary/Abstract: Historic environments are testimonies of the history of a place and its inhabitants. It is important to save these traces for future generations. At the same time historic areas, especially larger ones, must be able to develop and adapt to the needs and demands of contemporary society. This can create conflicts for urban planners as well as heritage experts. Choosing what to save, what can be removed, adapted or remodelled and how to restrict new implementations or infill projects is always a demanding task. It requires both deep knowledge and artistic skill. This paper will examine these problems in the context of the development and preservation of historic cities in Bosnia-Herzegovina, looking at examples in Sarajevo, Mostar and Jajce, while providing examples of successful new infill projects in historic urban environments from elsewhere in Europe.
