Summary/Abstract: This essay is concerned with the dilemma in which any historian is caught whenever trying to address a traumatic historical issue which continues to be hotly debated in contemporary society. How can he/she justify opening up old wounds? Referring to the long-running debate about the foundation of historical research, it attempts to find a more satisfactory answer to the vexed question.
