Summary/Abstract: This article describes the background, causes and objectives of the Iranian Revolution and its leaders, like Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini. The first part deals with the origins of Islam, its attitude to social life and politics and Islamic fundamentalism, with a focus on the movement led by Khomeini. The second part describes the situation of Iran in the beginning of the 20th century, the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty and attempts to modernise the country through various reforms. The rest of the article presents the main thinkers and leaders of the religious opposition and their methods, the course of the revolution from 1978 to 1979, the consequences of the take-over by the group led by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 and the fundamental objectives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
