Summary/Abstract: Birth rate as a demographic factor is under the influence, both by the natural and social factors. The goal of this paper is to show the level of birth rate which is under the influence of he social conditions in the last ten years of the 20th century. The decade mentioned is known in Serbia as the one with unsuitable social conditions, as well as considerable migration of population from the former republics of Yugoslavia to the Republic of Serbia. Besides, the article is showing the fertility of women according to its marital, educational and national structure. The final goal is to make the picture of the fertility characteristics at the end of the 20th century and the starting point of the next century. It can be seen that the demographic transition was not the only factor to be considered in connection with fertility conditions but also the specific social context. The methodology for this kind of investigation does not exist although the connections are obvious.
