Summary/Abstract: The paper considers the nineteenth-century shift of dilettantism from a descriptive to a highly evaluative term in Hungarian literature along literary professionalization and modernization. Dilettantism, a fundamental term of the new, modern, literary and artistic vocabulary in nineteenth century, is recovered here as a powerful response to a complex frame of anxieties and frustrations in face of several challenges ranges from transnational nationalisms to the decline of mimetic poetics.
