Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the reasons for the significance and for the wide usage of the word “energy”. The meanings of the energy concept in current vocabulary are discussed, and the physical peculiarities of the term are unfolded. The article shows that its transfer from physics to psychology and the fields of knowledge where natural language, instead of that of mathematical models, is used, is impossible without losing meaning. After giving an overview of the attempts by the founder of analytical psychology, C.G. Jung, to apply the concept of psychic energy to the reality of the soul, the article points out that “psychic energy” is an inadequate term for the explanation of psychical dynamics. Along with a methodological level of analysis, the article attempts to grasp the psychological meaning of the energy concept. It is in the latter sphere that this word has become enormously attractive to pseudo-scientific literature and has gained wide popularity. The identification of energy with a mystic power, which is allegedly scientifically describable and manageable like technologies, satisfies the consumerist expectation of fast psychological comfort. Finally, the article notes that the emphasis on energy as power produces a favourable environment for the spread of the ideology of power, and thus the word “energy” acquires an additional, ideological, meaning.
