Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problems of transformation of urban public spaces. It does this by focusing mostly on squares after the reestablishment of independence. The author discusses the tendencies of these transformations and notes that they are extremely controversial. There are attempts to change the structure and functions of these spaces by demolishing signs of Soviet ideology. Bu at the same time these fast attempts create new visual signs often at the expense of the quality of monuments and the real functions of urban public spaces. Such processes can be traced in earlier historical periods when the repertoire of visual signs was emptied and a need for changes of public spaces occurred. Most recently a new tendency emerged: the interest of private capital urges municipalities to restructure public spaces into parking lots.
