Summary/Abstract: The article considers the presence of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in pre-war and post-war curricula for teaching Polish language, and the different ways “Szkice węglem” (“Charcoal Sketches”) are discussed in secondary school, with particular emphasis on issues of literary communication. The popular opinion which states that Sienkiewicz is discussed less in today’s schools is verified. The proposed analysis and interpretation of “Szkice węglem” shows the possibility of fulfilling many educational requirements of both the basic and the expanded level. The condition of the student-readers was also reflected upon, particularly their knowledge and skills which allow to recognise the linguistic measures and aesthetic categories important for the understanding of the text. The article confirms that works of Henryk Sienkiewicz, particularly “Szkice węglem”, is an important and necessary element of Polish language education in today’s schools.
