Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the translation of certain significant Bible passages in the early Slavonic hymnography (10th–11th century). It discusses different options, chosen to translate three Greek models, which are characterized by high frequency and serve to establish important Christian symbols: the lexeme ὁ τριστάτης (Exod. 14:7; 15:4; 2 Kings 7:2, 17, 19; 9:25; 15:25), the formula ὁ περιούσιος λαός (Exod. 19:5; Titus 2:14) and the expression ἐξαλείψας τὸ καθ’ ἡμῶν χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν (Col. 2:14). The analysed data from manuscripts from different centuries and origin are summarized in the following conclusions: 1) the renditions of Biblical citations and allusions in hymnography was mainly influenced by the translations of the Biblical texts, which were liturgical components (Old Testament and New Testament readings, Biblical odes) or which were used as model melodies (heirmoi); 2) in the cases of significant variability of the hymnographic texts (e.g. for the formula περιούσιος λαός) it remains disputable, whether or not these allusions and clichés were properly recognized as symbols and prototypes; 3) the absence of a unified linguistic pattern of individual biblical clichés characterizes the entire Medieval literature and was even inherited by the Church-Slavonic printed books.
