Summary/Abstract: On the basis of modified conceptual metaphor theory, the article studies the metaphorical combination of a man and a transparent glass object in the works of the visual arts. Methodology. The methodology of this study is the using of analytical, typological, semiotic, psychological and art theoretical methods that allow us to identify the types of the metaphorical combination of the man and the transparent glass object and to explain the character of the viewers’ perception of this metaphorical combination. Scientific Novelty. The scientific novelty of the article is determined by the fact that this work proposes a deeper understanding of methods by which artists construct hybrid visual metaphors. Moreover, it interprets the recognition of the objects of visual metaphor in a different way. Conclusions. There are two types of the hybrid visual metaphor that combines the man and the transparent glass object. The first type is available when the man and the transparent glass object are physically fused in one, unified entity. The second type is created when on the basis of certain composition and point of view the man and the transparent glass object leave an impression on the viewer that they belong to the same visual figure. On the ground of the latest theories of concepts this study argues that perceptual categorization of the objects of visual metaphor is context dependent and flexible because the viewer applies to these visual objects unstable and dynamic concepts.
