Sri Aurobindo’s National Idea and Revolutionary Movement in Bengal

Summary/Abstract: In the article the author presents the role played by Bengali national leader Sri Aurobindo in the early XX century. The author analyzes in detail his political article „Bhavani Mandir“ as well as Bankim’s song „Vande Mataram“. Both had a great impact on people’s minds after the partition of Bengal in 1905. The author describes the beginnings of the revolutionary movement and the activities of women like sister Nivedita and Sarala Devi. The central idea of the article is to disclose the function of shakti idea in Sri Aurobindo’s writings and how it worked on political grounds. The author comes to the conclusion that the actualization of the Mother Goddess’ cult was the main impulse to build the national identity of Hindus and to start revolutionary acts.
