Summary/Abstract: Library 2.0 no longer represents only a concept, it becomes increasingly more an undeniable reality in the online environment; its services and resources are accepted and explored with interest by the information consumers, both library users and nonusers. The next generation catalogue is one of the main pillars of this modern construction, which does not only replace the traditional and outdated OPAC, but it offers spectacular, serendipitous and innovative ways of discovering information through local and remote access to bibliographic data and full-text managed/subscribed by the library. The article examines the context and reasons which determined the decision to change the old OPAC, presenting the functional characteristics of the next generation catalogue, which is updated to the XXIst century’s requirements, in order to meet the expectations and information needs of all Internauts, who are so accustomed to the Web 2.0 space and its tools.
