Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with traditional Indian aesthetics. It analyzes Vaastu Shastras and Shastras. These works are ancient treatises on architecture and the fine arts that discuss the problems of the artist as a subject of the creative process. The article also considers how the same problems are solved in other Indian aesthetic treatises and compares them all. The role of a canon in the Indian aesthetic tradition is also discussed. As a rule, the canon was nothing more than just a general religious and aesthetic schema on the limits to artistic freedom.
