Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the development of Ancient Greek legal awareness and its manifestations in the history of Greek political thinking. It focuses on two relatively independent phenomena of Greek civilization: power and law. The article offers an analysis of their interplay. In contrast to Eastern countries, the forms of Greek regimes continuously mutated. Each historical period and each region had its dominant form of political regime. During shifts from old to new regimes, the new regime was legitimized by relying on the principle of order and justice prevalent at that time. This principle was represented, at least at the beginning, by the Goddess responsible for cosmic order.
