Summary/Abstract: Single-sex education provokes many controversies among policy makers, parents, teachers, as well as education researchers. Unfortunately, the discussion about its potential advantages over coeducational schooling, in light of uncertain empirical evidence, has been ideologically dominated and remains this way to date. This article identifies definitional problems, which hinder effective discussions on the issue of single-sex education. Arguments proposed by advocates and opponents of this form of education are outlined in a neutral way, focusing on their merits rather than on their ideological grounds.
