Ornamentalism in contemporary Russian painting (theory and artistic practice)

Summary/Abstract: The research focuses on the complex, ambiguous and little-known phenomenon of ornamentalism in contemporary Russian painting at the turn of the millennia. The author analyses the phenomenon taking into account the theoretical principles, formal determinants and various visual implementations at the level of content and means of expression. In the context of theory and artistic practice the ornamentalism as a trend in contemporary Russian painting seems to consist in a visual-and-semantic message intended for both watching and ‘reading’/’interpreting’ with the use of an appropriate interpretive key. In the conclusion a comparative perspective is employed to reveal the differences and similarities between ornamentalism and ethno-futurism.
