Summary/Abstract: The paper puts forward a hypothesis about the original meaning of the expression: 'when a willow tree bears pears' with the English equivalent Prickly pear trees don't produce peaches. It traces the spread of the phraseological unit in several European and non- European languages, systematizes its meanings and shows the emergence of a persistent motif in different folklore genres.
