Summary/Abstract: The paper seeks to suggest the negative effects that a prosumer culture will have on collective memory. By grounding the paper in the theoretical discussion initiated by Ritzer and Jurgenson, the paper looks at sites of memory and the participatory cultures enabled by Web 2.0. The main problem is that prosumption supplants collective memory because prosumption validates and celebrates the individual’s memory. This is a troublesome theory, because as we move towards a culture that seeks freedom and the erasure of authority in the online environment, the implications as how this will undermine collective memory are daunting, especially for humanists.
