Innovation in the Management of Public Universities – Comprehensive Information System of the University of Lodz

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – The aim of the article is to present the situational conditions of the University of Lodz in 2004 and the general assumptions of the Comprehensive Information System project for the Management of the University of Lodz (CIS), as well as the process of its implementation in the years 2012–2013. Design/methodology/approach – For the realization of the aim formulated in this way, methodological triangulation was used consiting in using a combination of different research methods to obtain consistent empirical basis for inference. Three qualitative methods were used – participant observation, direct observation, and case analysis, and one quantitative method – financial data analysis. Findings – The article describes the barriers to the implementation of management accounting tools used in CIS and the ways of overcoming them. Originality/value – The final part of the article presents the influence of the use of information from CIS on the effectivity of management at the University of Lodz.
