Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the motivation of helonyms from Marijampolė County formed by means of compounding and recorded in the “Land Names” questionnaires during the interwar period. It is an excellent source for the research of toponomination because the questionnaires record the descriptions explaining the onomastic situation and the commentaries of informants providing place names which enable us to take a look at the toponymic material through the prism of experience and evaluations of representatives of the ethnic region. In order to find out the tendencies of naming swampy places, the analysis of place names is based on the distinction of the principles of topoobject nomination according to landscape peculiarities, local, ownership-related, cultural-historical relations. Attention is also paid to the declaration of self by a member of the linguistic community (nation) in linguistic units. It is also the first time when situational helonyms in which a typified situation or event marks a little known and poorly familiar object are distinguished and discussed in Lithuanian toponymy.
