Census and Registration of the Population in the Ottoman Empire. The Districts of Prilep, Prespa and Ohrid in 1884

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the manners of the census and registration of the population in Ottoman Empire – from 15th-16th centuries till the last census in 1907. Three original documents in Ottoman Turkish language, preserved in St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia, show the result of this process in districts of Prilep, Prespa and Ohrid in Macedonia. According to Ottoman administration the male population of these regions consists of Muslims, Bulgarians, Greeks and Gypsies (Muslims and Christians).
