Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the etymological analysis of the West Baltic mythologeme Pargrubij (A, B) / Pargrubius (B, C), including its alternative forms Grubrium (A), Gubrium (C), Pergrubrius (D, ε), etc., and Lithuanian mythonym maselis ‘a man dressed in the clothes of Shrovetide mummers.’ It also presents a short review of the realia concerning “The Yatvigian book” and introduces the so called Phenomenon of Azazel (name of the place or the “power” to which one of the goats in the Temple service of the Day of Atonement has to be sent), i.e. a scapegoat icon reflected in the data collected in the Dictionary of Lithuanian Language, which is also traced in Shrovetide rites that lasted three day before the Lenten fast which begins on Ash Wednesday (Shrove Tuesday in Lithuania).
