Summary/Abstract: The article argues that the history of spatial planning in Poland is an example of the deinstitutionalisation of the institutional order and identifies its mechanisms. Referring to the theory of deinstitutionalization based on the loss of social legitimacy, the author suggests that the crisis of the planning sector in Poland was primarily influenced by the systemic transformation which undermined the normative and organisational basis of the sector developed in the People’s Republic of Poland and highlighted the lack of public support for its functioning. Attempts to create a new institutional order, corresponding to the new socio-economic environment, did not lead to the creation of solutions that would meet the assumed objectives, resulting in a prolonged institutional crisis that fulfilled the premise of ‘hard deinstitutionalisation’.
