Summary/Abstract: Despite growing recognition of the importance of energy innovation, global spending on energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) has not risen over the past four years. Efforts by the public and private sectors also differ – the IEA data show that while governments spend more of their RD&D budgets on energy efficiency and renewables, the private sector spends a larger share on the oil, gas, networks and utilities sectors. Mission Innovation, the IEA’s Technology Collaboration Programs, and the EU SET Plan provide important opportunities to boost and maximize the benefits from energy innovation efforts.
