Summary/Abstract: Mission is above all about sending and since the Old Testament is a history of different commisions for the purpose of salvation, we can talk about a missionary theology of the Old Testament. One of the most relevant cases on this matter is that of Abraham. One can name at least two missionary exigencies in the patriarch’s life that can be applied to any missionary today. First, there is the witness in its two dimensions: on the one hand, the worship expressed through the altar building and the calling of God’s name, and on the other, the personal ethics as the force of example and active pedagogy as well. Second, we have the intercession: as a sacerdotal act par excellence, it must be made, as Abraham did, on the part of compassion, for the purpose of everyone’s salvation. The intercessive dimension of the patriarch’s life is an anticipation of the mediation carried out later by Israel, the Church and especially by Christ. It invites us to a boldness in the favor of our neighbour, given the awareness that our missionary work is not our own, but belongs to God.
