The pastoral and spiritual value of Confession and of the Holy Eucharist – elements of the Pre-Nicene Fathers

Summary/Abstract: 2004 was decreeded within the Romanian Patriarchate as the anniversary year of the Holy Eucharist and Confession due to the importance of these two ecclesiastical Sacraments in their tight connection and their efficiency in the Orthodox Christian life. Confession is known to be tightly linked to the Holy Eucharist, which together emphasize the faithfulness of the Orthodoxy for the mission of the Church turned towards the people’s heart and soul and aiming at the inner transfiguration of the faithful man who pursues holiness. This study describes in detail the spiritual and pastoral value of these two Holy Sacraments as one may find them in the Pre-Nicene Fathers of the Eastern Church, with a special emphasis on certain Fathers of the Church such as St. Irenaeus of Lyons, St. Cyprian of Cartagena, St. Clement of Alexandria or Origen
