Summary/Abstract: The Ferrara-Florence Council (1438-1439) is a crucial that marked in thehistory, the reletionship between the Catholic and the Orthodox Church. It wasthe end of a long period of several Union attempts, between the XI-th and theXV-th century, a Union between the East and the West that followed the GreatSchism of 1054.All these Union attempts and so-called Union proclamation held by theChurches in 1204 (the Fourth Crusade and the conquest of Constantinopol),1274 (the Union of the Lyon), 1369 (the Union of John V Paleologos), 1439(the Union of Florence) and 1452 (the Union of Constantinopole) did nothingbut worsen the abyss between Rome and Constantinopole and increased thesuspicion, since the Union has not been seen as a necesity and was notdetermined by an honest beliefe - all these attempts were mainly based onmutual interests. On the one hand, the Pope wanted to extend his domination over theOrthodox East and on the other hand He was beeing seen by the orthodoxchristians as the only person able to gather around him the western militaryforces in order to avoid the turkish danger. This article shows the way the Ferrara-Florence Union was received in theregions lived by the eastern slaves. It also describes Isidor s mission, from theend of the Council until the fall of Constantinopole – 1440-1453- mision thatwas mainly targeted on imposing the florentine decision.
